This mask was worn by an eighth-grade boy from Preluca Veche in the Northern province of Maramures, Romania, during his performance as one of two devils in the popular yuletide play, the Viflaimul (the Bethlehem play). Also known as the Irozii (the Herods), this play performed by children and adults all over the country tells the story of King Herod, who, upon hearing of the birth of a new king, became overwhelmed by fear and jealousy and ordered the murder of all male children under the age of three in Bethlehem.
